Insulating sliders

If they exist

Insulating sliding doors…

Are there sliding doors that are also insulating?

As much or more than the folding ones?

Many clients and friends, when they call us for advice on which product is the right one for their home, tell us that they do not want sliding doors because they have heard and read in forums that casement and tilt-and-turn windows are more insulating and protect better, as air does not enter.

And the truth is that 90% of the windows that are replaced in Madrid are c-windows that, although they retain a good and acceptable visual appearance, are old aluminum sliding windows through which cold, wind and noise easily slip through.

The truth about sliding doors and windows

We are going to explain how they work so that you can choose which window is best for you and which one you should opt for, either folding or sliding.

It is true that sliding windows move by means of wheels and these are supported by rails, so that to move they need space to allow sliding. The larger this space, the better they run but the more air, noise and wind passes through them. This is why the old and old aluminum windows do not insulate or protect and the wind circulates freely through them.

If you live in an apartment, cleaning the exterior glass is complex and dangerous as we have to lower the leaves to the ground if we want to clean the windows well, and without a doubt, the modularity that they offer us is unquestionable by not taking up useful space the house, but this post is not about this and whether the current sliding windows insulate or not.

If there are sliders that isolate.

It is important to bear in mind that the windows that we are going to install in our house have to insulate us in a double sense, by transmission and by permeability or tightness , let me explain.

When we touch an old aluminum window in winter we feel the cold of the aluminum, we say that it is frozen . This window acts as a cold radiator in winter and heat in summer, contrary to what we need. This is transmission, the outside temperature enters our house through the materials that are supposed to protect us.

Let's imagine that we live in an attic, on the corner and the building is the tallest in the city, but we do not live in Madrid but in the Canary Islands. Our need for insulation will not depend on the transmittance, but on the permeability or resistance of the windows to the wind. Permeability also influences sound insulation.

It's not all it seems

And we cannot ignore that research and development have also reached the windows, even more so when we are immersed in a revolution for the sake of the greatest possible energy efficiency.

And here the sliding openings can contribute a lot.

In this type of windows and doors , the glazed surface is greater than in the traditional and tilt-and-turn opening types. So we can say that if our window is large and occupies a large part of the wall, the glass is an element to take into account even more than the opening model and/or the material from which the window is made.

Let's give an example : In the mountains of Madrid with temperatures below zero, the house facing north, the advisable thing is a window that incorporates low transmission glass with the largest possible light surface and under solar control. The profiles of the windows in the same way must have a low transmission and ideally they should be thin and thin to give more relevance to the glass.

A tilt-and-turn window will provide us with better permeability or tightness in wind and noise scenarios, but the slider would achieve a lower thermal transmission, a greater glass surface and, as a result, better energy efficiency by taking more advantage of the sun's rays.

High effectiveness and efficiency

If there are insulating sliding doors, and insulating windows too.

The new and modern models prioritize, on the one hand, watertightness and permeability, replacing the hair and fibers that surround the rails with deformable PVC rubber that surrounds the rails. Steel wheels are replaced with high-strength nylon wheels that provide excellent ride smoothness and increased handling durability.

The union between the leaves is made by means of inverted PVC profiles, so there is no longer the possibility of air, wind and noise entering through these crossings of the leaves.

Traction, hermetic and multipoint closures.

These systems achieve excellent airtightness and resistance to intrusion, so I can say that the new sliding doors and windows do insulate, protect and are safe.

K-Line guarantees all its products for 10 years against any manufacturing defect, and also provides the customer with a plus by having a direct link on their mobile with the certificates and approvals of their windows, in addition to being able to incorporate state-of-the-art home automation elements with the to be able to interact from the smartphone.

¿PVC O Aluminum?

In a previous post we published differences, advantages and qualities of both.

But are they all equally effective?

The benefits, resistance and durability will depend on your budget . The greater the qualities and benefits, the price will be increased in its same line. You have a large offer adapted to your budget, and without a doubt , the best price ratio is in k-Line , which perfectly combines a pvc profile as a core, aluminum as an external skeleton and finish, a multipoint steel fitting and infinity of configurations and glass possibilities.
